Installation of Dehumidification Rooms

This project involves wrapping the bridge’s main cable with high-performance polymer materials to create a uniform seal and installing dehumidification rooms within the bridge. Dry air is introduced into the main cable to reduce humidity and prevent corrosion of the cable strands.

The polymer-based material is spirally wrapped around the main cable and heat-shrunk into place, creating a seal between each wrapped section and fitting tightly onto the main cable itself. This sealing system was validated through air test bench testing with positive results. Since much of the work is conducted over and along busy traffic routes, dual-channel supports spanning both sides of the main cable are provided.

YTE Solution

YTE’s dehumidification system is designed to provide reliable 24/7 operation and real-time monitoring. To inject dry air into the cable, external windings are removed at several locations along the main cable, and wedges are inserted into the cable strands to open airflow paths. Zinc wedges are installed in pairs around the main cable at each location. These stainless steel sleeves are manufactured to high standards, forming a chamber around each insertion point of the main cable and providing an interface connection for the airflow ducts.

Airflow is supplied from the machine room through the bridge structure and connected to the suspenders until the injection points of the HDPE pipes. The pipes are electrofusion welded and installed by YTE. The machine room and dehumidification system are designed and commissioned by YTE. Located within the actual structure of the bridge, all components, including the dehumidifier, must be manufactured in sections to be lowered through a hatch and then assembled inside the bridge.

Special Requirements for Historic Structures

For historic structures, we obtain the necessary approvals to drill holes in the structure to install the duct system for the dehumidification system. Our desiccant dehumidifiers are equipped with monitoring devices that record the relative humidity, temperature, and air pressure entering the cable and the relative humidity, temperature, and speed of the air exiting the cable, ensuring optimal performance of the dehumidification system.

Successful Dehumidification

The system is designed to maintain the relative humidity within the machine room at 20%, then use large fans in the machine room to blow dry air into the cable. Our dehumidification system features a desiccant wheel at its core. The air needing dehumidification is drawn into the machine room, passed through the desiccant dehumidifier, where moisture is absorbed by the desiccant wheel, and the resulting dry air is sent back into the cable. Simultaneously, a separate airflow passes through the regeneration section to remove the absorbed moisture and discharge it into the atmosphere.
